Working together, we've helped make our Medical Center the best in the area, and our ongoing cooperation is sure to lead to even greater achievements. I wish Dr. Jeff Matican, our incoming Medical Staff President, much success, and I'm delighted that the role of President will be in such good hands.

Milestone for Cardiac Surgery Program

neurovascular jpg From Warren Geller, EHMC President and CEO, and Stephen Brunnquell, MD, Medical Staff President

Wednesday, November 13, 2013, was a monumental day in our Cardiac Surgery program. James Klein, MD, EHMC Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery (pictured), and his team successfully performed our 300th cardiac surgery case of 2013. It is the first time in our award-winning program's history that we have reached this important milestone. This achievement comes at a time when the number of cardiac surgery cases has been in decline for the past decade across the state and the country. Our congratulations go to Dr. Klein and all of our leaders for their continued support of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. A special thanks to our entire Medical Staff for making this happen.

Our entire team is excited about closing out a successful 2013, with the best yet to come in the New Year.

Diep Flap Breast Reconstruction Now Performed at EHMC

EHMC's Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center now offers another breast reconstruction option for patients who have lost one or both breasts due to breast cancer treatment. The "DIEP flap" technique uses skin and fat from the patient's own abdomen to recreate a natural-appearing breast, which preserves muscle and my reduce recovery time.

"The traditional method sacrificed the patient's abdominal muscles, causing a loss of abdominal strength and a potential for hernias in some cases," explained Cyrus Loghmanee, MD, EHMC plastic surgeon. "We do not have to remove muscle with the newer microsurgical technique, which means our patients may enjoy a better outcome and a superior aesthetic result."

Other benefits may include less pain and a more speedy recovery. "The DIEP flat technique rounds out our full slate of breast care services," said David Abramson, MD, Chief of Plastic Surgery at EHMC. "We are thrilled to offer all advanced options for breast reconstruction to or patients. For many, breast reconstruction represents a significant portion of their journey to health and wellness." Yoga for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Patients

We are thrilled to announce a new free yoga program at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, beginning in January 2014. The classes are available to all women diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. As you know, there are limited treatment options for these patients who have estrogen, progesterone and HER2 negative (i.e., triple negative) breast cancer. We anticipate that integrating yoga in their care will not only improve their sense of well-being, and allay anxiety, but may also impact their overall prognosis. The program will be overseen by EHMC hematologist and oncologist Dr. Minaxi Jhawer and Kula for Karma, a local nonprofit organization.
